Helmets[]

The first priority for any soldier is a helmet. Even the lowest peasant levy, or men such as archers who will not be expected to fight hand-to-hand, will find away to protect their head. For this, they have a number of options that will often by dependent upon their wealth, or their liege's generosity.

  • Coif -
  • Aventail -
  • Kettle Helm -
  • Halfhelm -
  • Great Helm -
  • Barbute -
  • Salet -
  • Bascinet -

Cloth and Leather[]

After the helmet, every soldier will wish to acquire protection for his torso. A limb can be amputated, but a shattered rib cage isn't something you recover from in this world. GRRM often references "boiled leather" as a kind of basic, low-ranking individual's armor choice. There isn't really a historical precedent for this, since leather on its own is not a good source of protection. But leather can often be incorporated into the following.

  • Gambeson - A long quilted tunic, long-sleeved and high-necked. The quilting is stuffed with compressed wool, providing the soldier with a flexible and shock-resistant layer that is worn directly over their clothing, and under all other armor. The gambeson may be made primarily of wool, or leather. A gambeson is the most basic layer of armor, and nearly every soldier will have one since it is relatively easy to produce compared to metal armors.
  • Arming Jack - Same concept as a gambeson, but more closely resembling a doublet. Worn under full-plate, where it is preferred for its compact nature.
